The Darjeeling tea is called the champagne among all kinds of teas in the world and this is obviously due to the flavor. In the experiment with the genes of the tea leaves a compound named tarpins is found in large quantity in Darjeeling Tea leaves. But these compounds only react when they are infected by a certain insect that is intrinsic to the Darjeeling region. Geraniol and linalool are the primary reason behind the flavours which is found in the compound tarpin. But there is another popular belief that this flavor is artificially prepared as well which again affects the true heritage of the industry.

The figures given by the Darjeeling Planters Association bears much testimony of the huge world wide demand for this special flavor. The annual production of Darjeeling tea is around 11 million kilograms and this comes from the tea plamtation which is spread over 86 gardens covering an area of 19,000 hectares. Tea plantation today engaes around 52,000 people besides a 15,000 persons additionally engaged in the tea plucking season.
